It is striking to see just how many women are represented in exhibitions and major international art shows at present. Art, long a maledominated realm, has undergone a fundamental transformation over the last century that shows no sign of slowing: women, no longer limited to being the subjects of art, are now the ones creating it.
Women in Focus is devoted to works by female artists. Not for the sake of having a womenonly exhibition, but to showcase and reexamine themes that art often views through relationship hierarchies and stereotypes.
Representing different generations and artistic backgrounds, the 14 artists featured in this collection are united in asserting their creative freedom to visualize what is often unchallenged, without shying away from socalled “female” topics: interpersonal relationships, sexuality, societal concepts of beauty, and gender relations are examined through humor at times subversive, at times selfdeprecating, as are deeper layers of the artists’ own identity and the tugofwar between tradition and sociopolitical issues.
The artists, and hence the exhibition itself, explore these themes through portraiture. Experimenting with different techniques, they deconstruct, rearrange, and challenge conventional ideas as they examine and express their perception of the world.
Women in Focus prompts the viewer to reassess women’s image and place in the art world. It is a study of one way in which art has the power to change society, and is at the same time a celebration of diversity.
